Most everyone would agree that one of the best things about our breed is our people, and their willingness to share their knowledge and information about Brahman cattle. In this spirit, I got a great phone call last week from ABBA past president Marcus Shackelford of Florida. Marcus is one of the greatest Brahman historians of all time. Seriously, he can tell you the pedigrees on history on so many of the historical animals in our breed it's really unbelievable that one person can remember that much information.

So Marcus had called to help me learn a little more about the Didor line of cattle that Brandon and I had our first argument about. This wonderful man researched this line and gave me a lot of additional insight that I didn't even realize existed about the Didor line.

More on the Didor line, as far as Marcus could research, the first Didor cow came about from the Ted Mangum herd, who is one of the original 5 divisions of J.D. Hudgins. This is the JDH shoulder brand that is an XL. Today, Ted Mangums children and grandchildren operate this division. Family members from this division would be Harry and Sarah Goudeau and their sons Greg, Robert and Michael Goudeau and their families.

  2. Anyway, Marcus faxed me a pedigree for JDH Lady Didor Manso 8, who was born in 1966. Marcus owned this cow. Her sire was JDH Didor M Manso 48, ABBA #151700, who was the best bull Ted Mangum owned, in his opinion. From the story Marcus told me, Ted Mangum loaned a bull with the Didor breeding to J.T. White, and Mr. White used the bull very heavily, thus adding lots more animals to the Didor bloodline. From J.T. White the bloodline went to Johnny Jefcoat, and was also used by Clyde Goudeau, and these men made the bloodline famous.

The most interesting thing I learned from Marcus is that the ABBA's Standard of Excellence Cow is from the Didor bloodline! Lots of us (including me) have this cow hanging in our living rooms.

The dam of the "ideal" cow (651) is JDH Miss Didor 14 who's private herd # is 414 (ABBA #216071), who has the Didor bloodline on the top side of her pedigree. According to old breeding notes from Ted Mangum, 414 was the longest cow that he ever owned or saw.

Isn't it just great that we have this historical information to share with each other. I have looked at this cow a zillion times, and never really knew the story behind her. I'm sure there's more about this cow and this bloodline that is just waiting to be told! So we'll stay tuned and keep listening for more old Brahman bloodline stories. Aren't they great!
